I had been to about five Woodford Festivals over the years as a punter
before an emerging Gypsy band named DOCH from Brisbane, asked me if I could film them at Woodford 2003-4. I had been stalking them a while so I jumped at the chance. Armed with my trusty SONY PD150 I shot enough for quite an entertaining DVD show reel for them (you get to see ten minutes of that on this DVD).

I still love watching that DOCH DVD and have had party's where everyone has been dancing to it!

At that Woodford 2003-4, I also got some footage of John Butler (from which there is a amazing, encapsulating 8 minute guitar based instrumental from JB) which you can see on the DVD. I also shot Jeff Lang, Skin, Monsieur Camembert, The Bird, which unfortunately didn't make the final cut for the 0405 DVD. They're a pretty good home movies all the same!

I sent the DOCH DVD to Woodford the pinnacle of my music doco filming and didn't hear back for quite a while but then got the call from Amanda Jackes, the GM, who said she loved it and wanted to talk. She came for a meeting at my house that following Saturday and 18 months later we put out the DVD at the festival.

Sounds easy. Well hardly, but with the help of some good keen people, we have now got it out and hope to use it as a template for other festivals.

I would especially like to thank Bill Hauritz and Amanda Jackes for giving us a go back in the day, Arthur Moody for authoring the DVD, Tim London for his good spirits and graphic design skills, Bill and Marty from Satellite Discs who have made the sound so fat for the woodford 0506 DVD, Tianji Dickens for her web styling, the great staff in the Woodford shop and last but definitely not least Peter Broderick from Paradigm Films in the States who inspired us at the SPAA Fringe Festival in Brisbane to keep it totally independent.

Hope you like 0506 and we might see you at 0607.

Justin Brown, Film Maker, November 2006

.............................................................................................

I was a pommie backpacker travelling round Oz when I climbed the fence to my first Woodford Festival in 0304; one year later I was back there with an access all areas pass round my neck, producing this DVD.
That first Woodford had a profound affect on me: such a quality festival, unravaged by the corporate sponsorship that had tainted the scene for me back in England.

My experience there, and the people I met, influenced my decision to set up home in SEQ when time came to hang up the backpack.

Settling in Brisbane early 2004, I started looking for projects to get involved in. After 10 years of contributing to rabid consumerism as a writer/creative director in the advertising agency world, the time was right for me to use what I'd learned for something I believed in.

I met Justin Brown (JB) at a film networking party at Merthyr Bowls Club midway through 04 and ended up back at his place for a nightcap, watching some of his films. A John Butler performance came on, shot at the 0304 festival which I had attended, and it was captivating- a very special performance from JB, beautifully shot by the other JB, and it was clear to me then that Justin had an uncommon knack for shooting live music.

So the idea was hatched - to independently produce a music DVD for distribution through our website, with Woodford Festival as our target. And with DVD sales outstripping CD sales and the internet becoming the world's shop front, it even made good business sense! This, of course, remains to be seen.

The rest of the story involves charm, persuasion, charging batteries, arguing, passion, belief, record labels, patience and hard work. And it's not over yet.

If this Woodford DVD proves to be successful, we'd love to use the production blue-print we've established to do the same for some of the other fantastic festivals you have here in Australia. In my opinion everyone's a winner - the artists and festivals get increased exposure, the punters get a beautifully crafted memory and we get to make a living shooting music festivals!

So do the right thing n buy this DVD.
